At Darrang Primary School we are dedicated to providing a safe ans upportive learning environment where every student can thrive. We develop strong relationships with our students and families to ensure a strong home-school partnership. 

We support the emotional and social development of our students through a range of programs school-wide. Students develop important skills around managing their emotions, building positive relationships and communicating effectively with others. Social skills are explicitly taugh throughout the school with students engaging in a range of collaborative learning tasks.

Our school has embedded a consistent approach to affirmative and affective language that promotes empathy, respect and a sense of belonging. In collaboration with REAL Schools, we use restorative practices to resolve conflict and build strong connections within our learning enviromnent.

Restorative circles are held daily. These provide students with opportunities to develop relationships, strengthen their communicty, address any concerns or issues, explore new learning topics or prepare students for upcoming events or change. We use restorative practices to create a strong culture within our school.

Chaplaincy

Our Chaplain, Kane, works with a range of students across the school. Activities are centred around the development of social skills and interactions, emotional regulation and support, and physical supports to assist students when working through challenges. Active lunch-time clubs including Movie Making Club are provided for students to engage with in a safe and supportive learning environment. 

Lunch-time clubs

Clubs are offered each day at Darrang. Students are encouraged to identify clubs that they would like to engage with on a daily basis. Lego building, mindfulness - colouring and hama beading, board games, Minecraft, crafts and robotics are on offer each week. These are run by both our teaching and support staff to ensure students have structured activities to engage with during their breaks.

Clubs are fluid and students can enter/exit as they please. They provide an opportunity to connect socially, engage in interest based activities and allow students to have an alternative environment throughout the day.

Animal assisted well-being

Darrang PS has engaged with the Unconditional Love Foundation (UCLF), an animal assisted well-being program to support all our students. The connection between the animals and humans assists in developing connections, achieving positive emotional outcomes, develop empathy and compassion and enhance concentration and learning ability. This program is designed to strengthen the bonds between the animals and our students. We love having Scout and Pippin come to visit us.

Breakfast Club

Each Wednesday and Friday morning from 8:30am-8:45am Darrang Primary School support staff organises Breakfast Club, allowing students school-wide to connect socially, have something to eat and be prepared for their daily learning. Food is provided through our partnership with Food Bank with students enjoying a range of cereals, fruit, milk and toast. 

Brain breaks

Darrang provides frequent brain breaks to students to reduce cognitive load. These include a wide range of movement and food related breaks. Each day students have fresh fruit readily available to them.
